Hospices de Nuits, a deceptive record?

The 62nd Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges wine auction took place at Château du Clos-de-Vougeot.

The 62nd Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges Wine Sale took place this Sunday, March 12, at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, and it lived up to all its promises with a record overall result of €3,603,000 (hammer price), up 45% on the March 2022 sale (2021 vintage). This increase in sales, as impressive as it is, comes as no real surprise, since the "generous" 2022 harvest enabled Hospices de Nuits to offer 160 pieces of wine for sale this year, divided into 19 different cuvées (18 of pinot noir), compared with just 109 in 2022 (2021 vintage) and 120 to 130 on average for previous vintages. It's just as interesting to look at an indicator that more closely reflects market trends: the average price per 228-litre unit, and on this point sales recorded a... slight drop, but a drop of 1.27% nonetheless, to €22,518.75 (hammer price) per unit. Given the current euphoria and the seemingly limitless price rises for Burgundy wines, particularly in the prestigious appellations, is this small drop a first sign that the markets are running out of steam, a beginning of a return to reason? Time will tell... Note that the most expensive cuvée sold is a Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru Les Saint-Georges cuvée Georges Faiveley, priced at €55,000, compared with €52,000 last year; a rather reasonable increase for a fantastic cuvée.

A CHARITY PLAY IN AID OF BLOUSES ROSES

The "pièce de charité", known as the "cuvée des Bienfaiteurs", made from a blend of the estate's nine Nuits-Saint-Georges premiers crus rouges and sold by subscription, raised the record sum of €64,580 for the Blouses Roses, whose mission is to bring "wellbeing" to vulnerable people (children, adults and the elderly) in hospitals and retirement homes. With the proceeds from the charity play, the association hopes to set up two projects for disabled children, namely animal mediation sessions and music therapy.
