On September 19th, the Château of Clos of Vougeot will host the second edition of " Clos of Vougeot for the Abbey of Cîteaux.” Supported by the Heritage Foundation and the Brotherhood of Knights of Tastevin This sale, orchestrated by Christie's, will bring together the biggest names in Burgundy around a common cause: to finance the restoration of the Definitory of the Abbey of Cîteaux.
Following the success of the first edition in 2022, Burgundy is doing it again for Cîteaux. On Saturday, September 19th, the Château of Clos of Vougeot will be the venue for a new auction of exceptional wines, organized to benefit the restoration of the Cîteaux Abbey's Definitory. This event will bring together winemakers, wine merchants, collectors, and patrons around a heritage linked to Burgundy's winemaking history.
A massive mobilization of the Burgundy vineyards
For this second "act," the vineyard community is once again mobilizing. In total, 151 major donors will have their wines featured in Christie's catalogue, representing 61 distinct appellations: 24 Grand Crus, 19 Premier Crus, and 17 other appellations. villages and one appellation foreign. A diversity that illustrates the scale of the mobilization.
Wine lovers will find, in particular, iconic appellations such as Montrachet, Corton - Charlemagne The Task, Musigny , Large- Echezeaux Richebourg, Chambertin, Clos of Vougeot or Mazis -Chambertin.
The formats will also be unusual: the catalog will offer magnums, Jeroboams, Methuselahs, and 9-liter Salmanazars, alongside cases of vertical tastings. Some lots will also combine the bottles with experiences at the estates: tastings of older vintages, meetings with the owners, private tours, or even gourmet dinners.
Among the notable pieces is a vertical print of Montrachet in magnum of domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey on the 2020, 2022 and 2023 vintages, a vertical tasting of La Tâche du Domaine Romanée- Conti in 2014, 2015 and 2016, or even a jeroboam of Musigny 2005, signed Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier. The Maison Albert Bichot will, for its part, offer a Salmanazar of Clos of Vougeot 2006.
An online sale before the big dinner
The sale will begin online on September 4 at noon on Christie's platform and will continue until September 19. The closing night will take place at Château of Clos of Vougeot , where some lots will be auctioned off during the charity dinner.
The dinner, held in the Cistercian cellar of château This event will extend the encounter between wine, gastronomy, and heritage. Conceived and created by chef Alexandra Bouvret and her team, the five-course menu will showcase Burgundian and French cuisine, paired with the wines offered during the sale. Restore the Cîteaux Definitory
Behind the fine wines and the auctions lies, above all, a large-scale heritage project. The Definitory of Cîteaux Abbey, a 17th-century Cistercian building listed as a historical monument, is the subject of a vast restoration program estimated at 15 million euros.
Construction began in March 2025. The first phase of work is complete, and the exterior restoration is scheduled to continue until 2028. The goal is to open the Cistercian monastery to the public by 2030, including a space dedicated to the history of the Cistercian order and a conservation center for the Cistercian archives.
A mobilization for history
Founded in 1098, Cîteaux Abbey is the cradle of the Cistercian order. Its monks profoundly influenced the history of Burgundy's viticulture, notably by developing and structuring the vineyards that helped shape the Climats of Burgundy. Clos of Vougeot was built by the Cistercian monks more than nine centuries ago.
For Arnaud Orsel, general steward of the Brotherhood of Knights of Tastevin , THE Clos of Vougeot It thus constitutes a symbolic setting for this operation, with the current winegrowers finding themselves as "custodians and transmitters" of a winemaking history shaped by the monks of Cîteaux.
The first edition, held in 2022, raised nearly €650,000 for Cîteaux. With this second event, the organizers hope to give a new boost to the funding for the construction project.
Beyond the value of the bottles offered, the operation illustrates the solidarity of the Burgundy wine industry, which is mobilizing its wines to help preserve one of the places that has played a part in its history.
